A catered chalet is often seen as fundamental to a ski holiday, but they can be in short supply and expensive! There are loads of great value (and high quality) self-catered chalets and apartments out there. We've put together a quick response to some of the key concerns around catering for yourselves.
tl;dr a little bit of planning, one night of cooking and you’ve saved yourself hundreds of pounds!

What about the free wine 🥺?
Peek into the kitchen of most catered chalets, you’ll see two large boxes - one white, one red. You can find these yourselves in the local supermarket for less than a pint in your favourite après bar. Wine sorted 🍷
I’m not cooking every night
Divide and conquer. If you’re a group of 10, split into pairs and do a night each (yes, cooking AND cleaning). Add one meal out (as you would with a catered chalet) and a takeaway pizza night - that’s your week covered!
You can also double up - cook twice what you need one night, and you’ve got a second night covered (or a midnight snack on your return from après).
I can’t cook
Come on, back yourself! You can boil some pasta and add a sauce. It’s not gourmet but it gets the job done 🍝.
Otherwise most supermarkets (particularly in France and Italy) have counters dedicated to precooked food - casseroles, lasagne, roast veg, pretty much whatever you like!
Or, partner up with someone that can and do the washing up!
I can cook but my friends can’t even make toast
How do they normally survive? Get them washing up.
I need my afternoon tea and cakes 🧁
If you insist on something sweet, you can find plenty of sensational patisseries with a huge spread of treats. No need to head back to the chalet, just ride that sugar rush to the nearest après bar.
What about breakfast?
If you like a full English you will be best taking the team approach above. Otherwise head to the nearest boulangerie and snaffle all the pain au chocolats et croissants that you can fit in your over-sized ski-jacket pocket. Also, many places will deliver to your door.

Some are, especially in France, but there are also some spectacular chalets suitable for any group size or budget.
